For clients wanting to learn about New Zealand’s history and culture, a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a must. Having gone through myself, I can safely say it’s one of the most engaging cultural stops in the country.
Everything ran smoothly from the moment we arrived. We started with a guided tour that did a brilliant job of breaking down the story behind the signing of The Treaty - our guide made it easy to understand. They also have buildings along the way filled with artifacts, personal accounts, and interactive exhibits that give a look into the country's history and how the treaty came to be.
The grounds themselves are stunning, set on the hillside overlooking the Bay of Islands. Key highlights include the historic Treaty House, the massive waka. The cultural performance inside the meeting house was an absolute highlight, it struck a great balance between honouring tradition & keeping things light-hearted toward the end. Watching the pōwhiri (welcome ceremony), traditional singing, and powerful haka up close gave me genuine goosebumps.
Between the guides, storytelling, and coastal views, the whole visit was spot on. I’d easily recommend it to anyone heading up north.
