The Paparoa Experience is an impressive, immersive attraction that far exceeded my expectations. Housed in a beautifully designed building at the Punangairi Visitor Centre in Punakaiki, this is a world away from a traditional museum. It’s an innovative, interactive journey through the Māori culture, geology, history, flora and fauna of the Paparoa region.
Guests are warmly welcomed by the hosts, who introduce the experience, including sharing the Māori legend behind the origins of pounamu. From there, you’re free to explore at your own pace, discovering a series of rooms filled with multimedia displays, immersive projections and interactive experiences.
Highlights include learning about pounamu and the stories and roles of wahine Māori (women), exploring the region’s geology and native wildlife through interactive touchscreens, and following a virtual journey into limestone caves. One of my favourite features was walking through a replica cave into a cavern, where a virtual guide brings the underground landscape to life, with different geological features lighting up as they are explained. The virtual touch pools are another fun interactive element, allowing guests to explore the marine environment on a touchscreen. The experience finishes with a dramatic recreation of the famous Punakaiki blowholes, complete with wind and sound effects.

I was impressed with how thoughtfully the experience has been developed, and the range of information on offer. The technology enhances the storytelling rather than distracting from it, creating an engaging and meaningful introduction to the region. It’s particularly well suited to clients who enjoy taking their time, learning about a destination and absorbing information, with interactive displays and multisensory elements bringing the stories to life. Allow around 30 minutes for a quick visit, although some guests could spend up to two hours exploring everything on offer.
The onsite gift shop is well worth a browse, particularly for high-quality pounamu pieces alongside other local art and jewellery. A café also operates during the high season, and a Department of Conservation educator is often available in the reception area and is a font of knowledge about the local flora and fauna.
Best of all, this is an excellent indoor attraction that offers a welcome respite from the weather when the Wild West Coast lives up to its name.
