If I could write a book about the limitless possibilities for luxury, relaxation, and sheer joy in the Abel Tasman, Golden Bay, and Māpua region, I would. My sense of awe stems largely from a day that will go down in my personal history: my first hike in Abel Tasman National Park, my first helicopter flight, and a distillery tasting that would knock the socks off anyone who delights in flavour and exploration.
Our day began with a wonderful scenic cruise from Kaiteriteri to Abel Tasman National Park. We were treated to exceptional weather, iconic sights like Split Apple Rock, wildlife encounters, and a wealth of fascinating information from our guide, Zane - Wine, Art & Wilderness, who was happy to answer every question we threw his way.

After disembarking at Tonga Quarry, we geared up and tucked into delicious local treats Zane had thoughtfully brought along while the few other visitors headed off into the park. With waves lapping at the shore and birdsong filling the air, we spent the next five kilometres discovering New Zealand’s nature, Māori culture, and history, all while enjoying a good old yarn. The views improved with every turn, and so did the list of firsts. We sampled bush asparagus, licked blackbeech honeydew, and ran barefoot along an empty beach, sharing the sand with some crafty weka.
At Awaroa, Zane led us to a charming glade where we enjoyed a fantastic lunch prepared that morning by him and his wife, using produce from their garden and ingredients sourced from local artisans. Before long, our helicopter pilot arrived. After lunch and a safety briefing, we lifted off into some of the most breathtaking scenery I’ve ever seen.
I’ve enjoyed scenic flights in more than nine countries, as well as several across New Zealand, and this experience ranks among my top three. Every turn revealed sweeping views of Golden Bay, Abel Tasman, Kahurangi, and the spectacular landscapes in between. I was practically speechless as we descended towards our next destination: Kiwi Spirit Distillery.
Just when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, another chapter unfolded. We were welcomed by the owner of Kiwi Spirits who graciously hosted our entire tasting. Fun fact- they're the only place in New Zealand growing agave and producing 'Te Kiwi', its own tequila-style spirit. The tasting was exceptional, but what truly set the experience apart was the hospitality, knowledge, and genuine passion behind it. The ingenuity and heart poured into this family-run business made it one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had.

If you travel for flavour and love discovering authentic Kiwi culture, this is a place to add to your list.
To round off the day, our pilot from Nelson Heli took us on the scenic route back to our accommodation, pointing out even more of the region’s beauty along the way. My mind and heart were racing, and I couldn’t stop wondering, “How is this place still a hidden gem?”
Yet what struck me most was that the people of this region genuinely want to share what makes it special. They welcome you into their world, eager to share their treasures, and it’s this generosity, warmth, and care that make the experience so exceptional.
I know I’m neither the first nor the last to fall in love with this region, but I want so many more people to experience it for themselves. I have no doubt that anyone who prioritises this corner of New Zealand in their itinerary will find their own version of the thrill, wonder, and pure happiness I felt that day.
My experience was a day in paradise, but it was just one of thousands of possibilities waiting to be discovered. Imagine what you could experience with more than a day here. And if you can imagine it, chances are you’ll find it in this slice of paradise.
