Travelling on New Zealand's iconic TranzAlpine had been on my bucket list for many years, and I was delighted to finally experience the journey from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass.

The TranzAlpine is one of New Zealand's best-known scenic rail journeys, travelling between Christchurch on the east coast and Greymouth on the west coast of the South Island. Frequently recognised as one of the world's most beautiful train journeys, it is easy to understand why it continues to attract visitors from around the globe.

The scenery changes dramatically throughout the journey. From the wide-open Canterbury Plains to the turquoise waters of the spectacular Waimakariri Gorge, the train then climbs through the magnificent Southern Alps before arriving at Arthur's Pass National Park. As the only scheduled passenger train crossing the Southern Alps, the TranzAlpine offers a truly unique way to experience New Zealand's alpine landscapes.

I drove to Christchurch Railway Station early that morning. Check-in was quick and easy, and after receiving my boarding card from the friendly staff, I settled into my reserved seat for the 8:15 am departure.

Passengers can choose between Scenic Class and Scenic Plus seating. Throughout the journey, onboard commentary and information screens highlight the surrounding scenery, while the open-air viewing carriage offers spectacular panoramic views and the chance to enjoy the fresh South Island air. A café carriage is also available for drinks and light meals.

For those wanting an even more memorable experience, I highly recommend Scenic Plus, which includes locally sourced New Zealand food and beverages. Enjoying breakfast while admiring the ever-changing scenery was one of the highlights of my journey.

After arriving at Arthur's Pass, I completed the Devil's Punchbowl Falls walking track before enjoying a classic New Zealand lunch of fish and chips followed by ice cream at a local café. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons and the time of day, making every TranzAlpine journey a unique experience.

Why we think TranzAlpine is a great option for your clients:

  • The only passenger train to cross the Southern Alps, offering an unforgettable alpine rail experience.
  • A relaxing journey with the freedom to move around, including access to the open-air viewing carriage and café, unlike travelling by coach or car.
  • Designed for sightseeing, travelling at a comfortable pace with onboard commentary that enhances the journey.
  • Upgrade to Scenic Plus for a premium experience featuring locally sourced New Zealand food and beverages served on board.
  • Spectacular year-round scenery, with landscapes that change throughout the seasons and at different times of the day, ensuring every journey is unique.
