New Zealand is known as a bird sanctuary. I love to see wild birds. I visited lots of places & joined several tours, and this tour is one of my favourites.
Especially to see Kororā, the little blue penguins, this tour is the best option!
An experienced guide provides pick-up/drop-off from Dunedin Central and brings us to the various spots in Otago Peninsula before we join the blue penguin Pukekura Experience.
Otago Peninsula was formed millions of years ago from volcanic eruptions, and I enjoyed the spectacular coastal scenery with this tour.
We also visited some sights with a cultural connection to the people of this land, with many stories and visiting significant sites to Māori.
This is my second time visiting Dunedin, but I never knew that there is a Māori Marae in Otago Peninsula.
After 2 hours’ drive to Pukekura, we visited the largest colony of penguins on the Otago Peninsula, and we saw the penguins return from the sea and scurry up the beach from the viewing platform, just meters away.
As it is a sandy beach, it is easy to find the penguins swimming in the sea and standing up on the beach.
What is special about this tour is that, at the beginning of the tour, we learned about the penguins and other wildlife of this area before you venture down to the viewing platform to watch penguins.
Guides are experienced and knowledgeable, so they give us great information. Not only how penguins cry, but also what the difference in the way they cry… and how they react if penguins get in the wrong nest!
We walk freely on the viewing deck and take photos or videos of the cute penguins as much as we wanted!
