I recently had the opportunity to visit Lancewood Villas in Upper Moutere, and I was genuinely blown away by the beauty of the property and the surrounding region. Set across 33 acres of land featuring orchards and regenerating native forest, this boutique property offers a peaceful countryside stay.
The property has three distinctive accommodation units, each offering a unique colour scheme, tasteful décor, and artwork and furnishings from local craftspeople. There’s plenty of space between the units, with beautifully landscaped, private outdoor areas alongside shared spaces where guests can relax and enjoy the surroundings. The Cottage has a private garden and deck, a well-appointed bathroom and kitchenette, while the Woolshed features a surprisingly spacious bedroom, a full kitchen, lounge and private deck with an outdoor fireplace. The Studio offers a generous open-plan layout and a private lawn leading towards the orchard.

The naturally heated swimming pool is a lovely feature. The hosts are charming, offering recommendations for restaurants, activities and other local insights while tailoring their interaction to guests’ preferences. This is not the best choice for guests who are uncomfortable with animals, as there are two small dogs living on the property, although they are not permitted inside the guest accommodation.. A continental breakfast showcasing local produce can be arranged for an additional charge, and wine from a nearby vineyard is available to purchase. I also appreciated the property’s commitment to sustainability, including its ongoing native forest planting programme.

Lancewood Villa’s location makes it a fantastic base for exploring the wider region. Upper Moutere is around 30 minutes from Nelson and Kaiteriteri, making it well placed for an adventure in Abel Tasman National Park, as well as Kahurangi National Park and the surrounding wine-growing and arts communities. While a minimum two-night stay applies, I think it’s well justified given the travel time to the region and the range of experiences on offer. It gives clients time to truly appreciate the property and its beautiful surroundings, while exploring a variety of what the wider region has to offer.
