Rotorua is renowned for its bubbling mud pools, steaming geothermal landscapes and rich Maori culture, but there’s another side to this remarkable region that deserves a place on a travellers itinerary. Towering above the surrounding lakes, Mt Tarawera offers an extraordinary opportunity to hike across a landscape forever changed by one of New Zealand’s most significant volcanic eruptions. In June of 1886, Mt Tarawera erupted, dramatically reshaping the landscape and destroying the famous Pink and White Terraces. Today, it is an incredible place to explore on foot, with Kaitiaki Adventures offering guided half day and full day hikes that combine spectacular scenery, volcanic history and Maori cultural storytelling.

Expect panoramic views across Rotorua’s lakes and out towards the Bay of Plenty, rugged volcanic terrain, dramatic crater ridges and striking colours - from earthy reds to deep volcanic tones. For those feeling adventurous, there’s the exhilarating opportunity to run down the loose volcanic scree into the heart of the crater. It's an experience guaranteed to bring out the big kid in even the most seasoned adventurer!

Importantly, this is more than a spectacular hike. Mt Tarawera is sacred and holds deep cultural and spiritual significance to Ngati Rangitihi who act as guardians of this special place. Kaitiaki Adventures knowledgeable guides share the stories of the mountain, bringing its history and significance to life along the way.

The half day hike is an excellent option for itineraries where time is limited. Taking approximately 4.5 hours, it offers an immersive experience of the mountain's dramatic volcanic landscape, including the summit of Ruawahia and its sweeping 360 degree views. With a return to Rotorua before 3 pm, there's still time to experience more of what makes Rotorua so special. Pair the hike with a visit to a geothermal park (I would recommend Te Puia as this is the start/finish point for Kaitiaki Adventures) and a Maori cultural dinner or swap hiking boots for relaxation with a restorative bathing experience at Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa. It's a fantastic way to combine adventure, geothermal, culture and wellness into one memorable day.

For travellers with more time, the full day hike ventures further into the landscape, adding an exploration of the Tarawera Dome above Lakes Rotomahana and Tarawera. This offers more time on the mountain, to delve deeper into its extraordinary terrain and enjoy an even greater sense of adventure.

Why we think Kaitiaki Adventures Volcanic Crater Experience is a great option for your clients:

  • For those more adventurous travellers that are keen to experience New Zealand's dramatic volcanic landscapes but unable to fit the Tongariro Alpine Crossing into their itinerary, Mt Tarawera is well worth considering. While it is a different experience, it delivers that same sense of adventure - otherworldly terrain, impressive volcanic features, breathtaking views and the satisfaction of exploring somewhere truly extraordinary.
  • The half day option is a brilliant way to add an active, culturally rich and visually spectacular experience to a Rotorua stay, with plenty of time left to enjoy the region's other highlights.
  • Suitable for anyone with a moderate fitness level.
