I was lucky to experience the beautiful Nelson and Abel Tasman region on my latest visit to this region.
On arrival in Nelson, I was greeted by Lucy a lovely driver guide from Wine, Art and Wilderness who shared her wealth of knowledge about the region with me. Along the way to the hotel, I even got to enjoy a photo stop with an amazing view.
When it was time to leave Nelson, I did a tailormade tour with Wine, Art and Wilderness that included waka, a visit to the Riuwaka Resurgence, a stop at one of the local food producers in Upper Moutere and a wine tasting.
We started by travelling in a very comfortable Mercedes 12 seater van from Nelson to Kaiteriteri for the first stop of our tour the waka experience.
Lucy our driver guide was very friendly, passionate about the region and shared her local knowledge.
The moment we arrived in Kaiteriteri we were greeted by the friendly team from Waka Abel Tasman. After we learnt to introduce ourselves in Te Reo, our guide for the day was fantastic and made us feel very comfortable on the waka. Due to the weather we had a shortened trip towards Split Apple Rock and return to Kaiteriteri beach. While paddling along the Abel Tasman coastline I learnt about the history along the way as well as the cultural significance of the area.
This was a very enjoyable adventure that made us work together as a team in the waka and I highly recommend it.
We then continued on to visit Riuwaka Resurgence where we were able to visit the resurgence. We were met by a member of the local iwi for this part of the tour who told us all about the cultural significance about this location before taking us along the walkway to the resurgence along a beautiful short bush walk. After conclusion of our visit here we headed to Neudorf Mushrooms which is a family owned business in Upper Moutere. The passionate owners taught us about their business and love for mushrooms and this visit concluded with a sample of some of their produce. After lunch our last stop of the day was Flaxmore Vineyards for a delicious wine tasting at their cellar door while also enjoying the art gallery on site.
The combination of tour that I had was a great mixture of adventure and experience about what this region has to offer along with informative and interesting commentary from our driver guide Lucy who was nothing but fantastic. The level of service and attention to detail was exceptional. From handing out umbrellas for the rain, to providing you with snacks and water bottles along the way, nothing was too much trouble. I highly recommend Wine, Art and Wilderness Tours and their guides.
I can honestly say this exceeded all my expectations. It was a great day out from start to finish and I can only recommend it.
