If travellers are after spectacular scenery with steep mountains, ancient rainforest and untouched landscapes RealNZ’s Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise is a full day tour in Fiordland that will tick all those boxes.

The whole experience takes approximately 7 hours from Manapouri, 9 hours from Te Anau and 12 hours from Queenstown. If travellers are self driving - I do recommend staying overnight in Te Anau.

Arrive at the RealNZ Manapouri Visitor Centre 20 minutes prior to departure to check in and collect your boarding and lunch passes (free parking is available). If you have not pre-purchased lunch, a selection is available from the café, subject to availability. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own packed lunch onboard. As the tour operates in a remote location with limited catering options, it is recommended that travellers plan ahead by either pre-purchasing lunch or bringing their own.

Starting the adventure off in Manapouri with a 45 minute boat ride across Lake Manapouri to West Arm/Power Station you will get to enjoy views of forested islands and mountain ranges rising directly from the water and just the atmosphere of the lake. From West Arm take a 45 minute coach journey over the scenic Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove driving through 21kms of gravel road and climbing 671 metres high. The road was originally built to support construction of the underground power station and is the only way to Doubtful Sound. Then finally onto the main cruise through Doubtful Sound where you get to enjoy stunning views of native rainforest, mountains, waterfalls and the remote wilderness that makes Doubtful Sound so special. There's also a good chance of spotting wildlife like bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and occasionally penguins.

One of the notable things about Doubtful Sound is how peaceful it feels compared to Milford Sound. Its remote location means it generally attracts fewer visitors. The nature guides were so knowledgeable and passionate it really elevated the experience. For me the highlight of the day was the famous "sound of silence," when the boat engines are switched off and everyone gets to experience the incredible stillness of the fiord.

Overall, the Real NZ Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise is a great choice for anyone looking to experience spectacular scenery, wildlife and a quieter alternative to Milford Sound I would especially recommend to travellers who want to immerse themselves in nature.

Why we think the RealNZ – Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise is a great option for your clients:

  • A more remote and peaceful fiord experience – Doubtful Sound’s limited access means fewer visitors, allowing travellers to enjoy Fiordland’s stunning scenery in a quieter, less crowded environment.
  • A journey that is part of the adventure – the combination of a Lake Manapouri cruise, scenic coach journey over Wilmot Pass and wilderness cruise through Doubtful Sound creates a unique and immersive full day experience.
  • Exceptional scenery and wildlife encounters – travellers can experience towering mountains, ancient rainforest, cascading waterfalls and opportunities to spot bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and, on occasion, penguins in their natural habitat.
