One of the standout experiences during my West Coast famil was exploring the region with Hokitika Scenic Tours. From the moment I stepped aboard the comfortable 12 seater vehicle, it was clear that this was much more than simply getting from A to B, it was an immersive local experience. Our guide (and owner of Hokitika Scenic Tours), Rachel, was exceptional throughout the journey. Her warm hospitality immediately put everyone at ease and she went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable, with water bottles and classic Kiwi treats such as Pineapple Lumps and Whittaker’s chocolate available during the longer drives. What truly sets Hokitika Scenic Tours apart is Rachel’s extensive knowledge of the West Coast. As we travelled between destinations, she shared fascinating stories about the region’s history, culture, people and natural environment. Her passion for her home region was evident and added incredible depth to every stop along the way.

One of the highlights of the tour was the Hokitika Gorge Track. While the track itself is accessible for independent travellers, experiencing it with a local guide transformed the visit into something much more meaningful. Rachel’s commentary helped us understand the geological history of the area, the significance of the surrounding landscape, and the unique lifestyle of West Coast communities. The vibrant turquoise waters, native forest and suspension bridge make Hokitika Gorge a must see attraction but it was the storytelling and local insights that elevated the experience. Rather than simply admiring the scenery, we gained a genuine appreciation for what makes this part of New Zealand so special. Another standout highlight was visiting the iconic Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. Seeing these unique limestone formations up close was truly impressive and one of the most fascinating aspects is that there is still no definitive explanation as to why formations like these developed so prominently in this part of the West Coast and nowhere else. That sense of mystery only adds to the magic of the experience. Rachel’s extensive knowledge of the area’s geology brought the attraction to life in a way that would be difficult to replicate on a self guided visit. The Pancake Rocks are an unforgettable natural wonder and, in my opinion, a must see attraction for anyone visiting the West Coast.
