Having visited the Bay of Islands countless times over the years, I thought I had experienced the very best this spectacular region had to offer. From sailing adventures through turquoise waters to cruising among secluded coves and beaches, most of my favourite Bay of Islands memories have always been water based. Last week, however, I discovered an entirely new perspective….taking to the skies with Salt Air’s ‘The Hole Experience’ and it completely changed the way I see this iconic destination.
The Bay of Islands is made up of 144 islands and while they are stunning from sea level, seeing them from above provides a completely different appreciation of their scale and beauty. Departing from Paihia and flying at a relatively low altitude, it felt less like looking down on the islands and more like flying amongst them. Every turn revealed another hidden bay, rocky outcrop or island fringed by crystal clear, emerald green waters.

Our pilot provided informative commentary, pointing out landmarks, sharing local history and bringing the landscape to life in a way that added real depth. We tracked east towards the dramatic cliffs of the Cape Brett Peninsula, where one of the highlights was seeing the historic Cape Brett Lighthouse perched high above the rugged coastline as though standing guard over the entrance to the bay. We then circled one of New Zealand's most iconic natural landmarks – the Hole in the Rock, known by its Māori name, Motu Kōkako. The name is linked to a fascinating local tradition whereby kōkako birds were once kept on the island by Māori chiefs who prized their feathers for ceremonial adornments. This culturally significant island rises 150 metres above sea level and has long been admired by travellers passing through the famous sea arch by boat but very few set foot on top of it. Salt Air's exclusive access allows travellers to land on Motu Kōkako itself, an experience that feels both adventurous and incredibly special. Standing atop the island, surrounded by towering cliffs and uninterrupted panoramic ocean views was a genuine "wow" moment.

The return journey took us back via Russell, offering yet another perspective on this beautiful part of New Zealand. Having explored the Bay of Islands by land and sea many times before, I can honestly say that seeing it from the air was one of the most memorable experiences I've had in the region.
