My evening started right from downtown Queenstown with a cruise across Lake Whakatipu. It happened to be early winter and the sunset as we approached Walter Peak Station was stunning. Travellers usually get to sail on the historic, century old TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship but during the vessel’s annual maintenance period RealNZ operates a modern catamaran to ensure the experience can continue year round. I found it perfectly warm and comfortable too and the blankets provided on the top deck were a lovely touch. The cruise itself offers spectacular views across the lake towards Cecil Peak, Walter Peak and the Remarkables, making the journey part of the experience.

When you arrive at the beautiful grounds of Walter Peak High Country Farm, you’ll head inside the historic Colonel’s Homestead Restaurant for a buffet dinner. The old colonial building has a lovely, cosy atmosphere that makes you feel like a guest at a private country estate. The buffet itself is incredible, with a huge selection of food ranging from freshly BBQ’d meats to fresh salads and seafood so there is definitely something for everyone. Out of all the delicious New Zealand produce on offer, I particularly enjoyed the exceptional cheese station, showcasing incredible local cheeses – absolute heaven!

I also spent some time wandering through the beautifully maintained lakeside gardens surrounding the homestead. Combined with the historic colonial setting and alpine backdrop, it is easy to see why Walter Peak has become one of Queenstown's most iconic visitor experiences.
After dinner, we took a short stroll over to the custom built amphitheatre for a fun sheep shearing show and a quick look into the area's rich farming history. I really enjoyed hearing about the close bond between the high country farmer and his sheepdog. Watching the way they interacted with each other was a real privilege. The night wrapped up with a pleasant boat ride back to central Queenstown as the town lights started to glow. It is a smooth, three and a half to four hour experience and I can confidently say it offers great value as a dining experience in a truly special location.
