PDNZ Travel Tested: Waitai Lodge Fiordland Escape

After recently experiencing the Waitai Lodge Fiordland Escape, I can confidently say that after 26 years of working in tourism and travelling extensively throughout the country…it now sits firmly within my top 10 New Zealand travel experiences!

Accessible only by helicopter (or foot), arriving at Waitai Lodge immediately feels like stepping into another world. Tucked away in the remote wilderness of Martins Bay, the lodge offers a rare opportunity to completely disconnect from the pace of everyday life and reconnect with nature. With only eight rooms, it feels intimate and personal with a relaxed atmosphere that is ideal for small groups or couples wanting something genuinely special and exclusive.

One of the highlights for me was the guided afternoon and morning walks along the rugged coastline, untouched sand dunes and through the ancient podocarp forest, all while surrounded by the incredible peace and isolation that makes this part of Fiordland so special. That feeling of complete immersion in nature continued throughout the entire stay and was what stood out most to me overall - the overwhelming sense of stillness and serenity. Falling asleep to the soothing sounds of birdsong and the distant ocean was incredibly grounding, while the lack of light pollution made for some of the clearest night skies I have ever seen in New Zealand. Sitting beneath an incredible blanket of stars while soaking in one of the wood fired hot tubs was unforgettable. During my stay, the autumn roaring season added another layer to the experience, with the haunting sound of stags roaring in the distance echoing through the valley in the evenings - creating an atmosphere that felt uniquely Fiordland.

The hospitality throughout the stay was exceptional. Meals were thoughtfully prepared using fresh local ingredients and enjoyed communally around the dining table which created a warm and social atmosphere. The evening naturally flowed into relaxed conversations beside the fire in the lounge with a glass of Central Otago Pinot Noir from the fully licensed bar.

My two day escape concluded with a spectacular helicopter journey along the coastline back to Milford Sound and a cruise aboard the luxurious Fiordland Jewel. Experiencing Milford Sound from both the air and water offered a completely different perspective of this remarkable part of New Zealand, from the sheer scale of the mountains and remote dramatic coastline viewed from above to the waterfalls and towering cliffs experienced up close from the fiord itself. The cruise aboard the Fiordland Jewel was the perfect finale to the journey, made even better by a beautifully prepared lunch.

Altogether, this two day Fiordland Escape is, in my opinion, one of the very best ways to experience Milford Sound and Fiordland.

Why we think the Waitai Lodge Fiordland Escape is a great option for your clients:

  • Highly recommended for travellers wanting to truly immerse themselves in the region without feeling rushed. The two day experience allows for slowing down, disconnecting and fully appreciating the remote beauty of Fiordland rather than simply passing through Milford Sound as a day trip.
  • Particularly well suited to couples, honeymooners, special occasion travellers and mature independent travellers looking for something memorable, unique and high quality.
  • Appeals strongly to soft adventure and nature focused travellers who enjoy walking, wildlife, remote landscapes and genuine connection with nature, without requiring a high level of fitness or extreme activity.
  • The small scale and intimate nature of the lodge (with only eight rooms) creates a very personalised experience that feels private, peaceful and exclusive.
  • Combining both the lodge stay and Fiordland Jewel cruise offers travellers the opportunity to experience Milford Sound and Fiordland from both the air and water, creating a far more comprehensive and memorable experience of the region.
