Where the Glamour of the Past Lives On

In the heart of Auckland’s bustling Queen Street, Fable Auckland blends the elegance of the 1920s with the comforts of contemporary luxury. Housed within the historic Windsor House, this boutique hotel brings heritage, thoughtful hospitality and a touch of indulgence together to create a story worth staying for. Built between 1927 and 1928, Windsor House was commissioned by restaurant and soda fountain company W.R. Cooke and Son. Designed by architect A. Sinclair O’Connor, the building reflected Auckland’s growing commercial prosperity. Today, it is recognised as a Category 2 historic place by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.

The site itself has an even earlier story, once forming part of the foreshore of Commercial Bay, a significant trading area in early Auckland. As the waterfront was reclaimed and the city expanded, the area evolved into the bustling commercial centre we know today. Windsor House was converted into a hotel in 2000, giving this historic landmark a new chapter. Today, Fable Auckland offers a distinctive boutique experience where historic character meets modern sophistication. Its 79 rooms and suites are designed with comfort and individuality in mind, drawing inspiration from the glamour of the Art Deco era. Think rich jewel tones, elegant furnishings, luxurious bedding and carefully considered details, complemented by contemporary comforts such as Nespresso machines, Bose speakers and premium amenities from New Zealand brand Marihi Aotearoa.

For guests seeking something extra special, the hotel's suites provide a more indulgent retreat, including the Windsor Suite, with two bedrooms and a generous lounge. Whether visiting for a romantic escape, a city break or a special occasion, the hotel offers a sense of intimacy and personalised service that sets it apart from larger city properties. Dining is an experience in its own right. The Windsor Room pays tribute to the building's original dining heritage, when Cooke's tea rooms welcomed Aucklanders through its doors. Today, guests can enjoy contemporary interpretations of European classics, alongside thoughtfully selected wines, cocktails and the hotel's signature high tea. Served in elegant surroundings, high tea offers a wonderful opportunity to slow down and savour a little old-world glamour in the heart of the city. Beyond the guest rooms and restaurant, Fable Auckland invites visitors to make time for themselves. Guests can enjoy the private hot tub and sauna by reservation, unwind with in-room spa services or make use of the 24-hour fitness centre. With concierge assistance, room service and valet parking, every detail helps create a seamless and relaxing stay. Its Queen Street location places guests within easy reach of Britomart, the waterfront, designer shopping and Auckland's vibrant dining scene. Yet, behind its historic facade, the hotel offers a world of its own, where the city's energy gives way to warmth, elegance and quiet indulgence.

Fable Auckland is more than a beautiful heritage building; it is a living piece of the city's story. Here, history is woven into the design, the dining and the experience itself, inviting guests to become part of the story.
