On the ridge of Otago Peninsula, with sweeping views across Otago Harbour, stands a place unlike anywhere else in New Zealand. Larnach Castle is often described as New Zealand’s only castle, but what makes it truly special is not simply its grand architecture. It is the layers of history, beautifully restored interiors, internationally recognised gardens and, most importantly, the opportunity to stay within the castle grounds and experience this remarkable estate.
The story of Larnach Castle began in 1871, when wealthy businessman, politician and entrepreneur William Larnach commissioned architect R. A. Lawson to create an extraordinary home for his family. Built over three years by more than 200 workers, with a further 12 years spent embellishing the interior, the residence was designed in a Scottish Baronial style, with Gothic influences and lavish materials sourced from around the world. Marble from Italy, slate from Wales, floor tiles from England, glass from Venice and France were just some of the luxurious details incorporated into the home.
Yet behind the grandeur is a much more complicated story. Larnach built the castle for his first wife, Eliza, who died young. His life was subsequently marked by further marriages, family tragedy, financial difficulties and scandal, before his death in 1898. In the decades that followed, the property fell into disrepair and experienced a fascinating succession of uses, including accommodation for patients from Seacliff Asylum, a hospital for shell-shocked soldiers and even a retreat for nuns. At one point, the grand ballroom was reportedly used to shelter sheep!
In 1967, the castle found new custodians when the Barker family purchased the property. What followed has been an extraordinary labour of love, with generations of the family restoring the castle, gardens and surrounding buildings. Their dedication has transformed Larnach Castle into one of Dunedin’s most distinctive heritage experiences, ensuring its story continues to be lived rather than simply preserved.
And this is where a stay becomes truly memorable. Guests can choose between three distinctive accommodation experiences: Larnach Lodge, the historic Stables or the luxurious Camp Estate. Larnach Lodge sits within the South Seas Garden and offers 12 rooms with views across the harbour and peninsula, while the Stables provide a more historic stay within a 150-year-old heritage building. Camp Estate offers a glamorous country house experience just 1 kilometre from the castle.
Staying on the estate means the castle and gardens become part of your accommodation experience, rather than simply another attraction to visit. Guests can explore at a slower pace, enjoy breakfast and castle and garden entry, or indulge in the Castle Dinner Experience within the historic setting. For something particularly special, Victorian-style High Tea is served in the castle’s elegant Ballroom. Settle in for delicate sandwiches, freshly baked scones and sweet treats accompanied by tea or coffee - an experience that feels perfectly suited to the grandeur of the surroundings. Then there are the gardens which stretch across the estate. Wander through the Rainforest, South Seas Garden, the Lost Rock Garden and more, follow the Serpentine Walk or stroll beneath the famous Laburnum Arch. Throughout, sweeping views across the Otago Peninsula provide a spectacular backdrop.
