This week, Aotearoa (New Zealand) comes together to celebrate Matariki, the Maori New Year and one of the country's most significant cultural occasions. Marked by the rising of the Matariki star cluster (known internationally as the Pleiades), it is a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and look ahead with hope for the future.

Deeply rooted in Maori tradition, Matariki has been observed for generations as a season of remembrance, renewal and connection. Whanau’s (families) and communities gather to honour those who have passed, give thanks for the harvest, share food, tell stories and set aspirations for the year ahead. In recognition of its cultural significance, Matariki was established as a public holiday in 2022, acknowledging the importance of Maori culture. Across Aotearoa, iwi (tribes), communities and tourism operators host a range of events including cultural performances, storytelling, guided walks, art exhibitions, traditional kai (food), stargazing experiences and community celebrations and the atmosphere throughout Aotearoa is one of celebration and reflection. For those visiting New Zealand during the winter months, beyond spectacular snow covered landscapes, this is a time when travellers can gain a deeper appreciation of Aotearoa’s indigenous culture and traditions, creating memorable and enriching experiences.
