Located in the heart of Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, The Hermitage Hotel offers spectacular mountain views, premium accommodation, and direct access to some of the country’s most unforgettable natural experiences.
Major Wakefield Wing Renovation
The renovated Wakefield Wing is scheduled to reopen on 1 November. A key milestone in their investment programme is the extensive $12 million renovation of the Wakefield Wing. The project will deliver 38 fully upgraded Superior Queen Queen rooms, significantly enhancing the hotel’s premium accommodation offering, providing guests with elevated comfort and spectacular alpine views.
Enhancing the Dark Sky Experience

As part of The Hermitage’s commitment to immersive visitor experiences, the planetarium is also receiving a $375,000 upgrade to support the renowned Galactic Journeys experience. These enhancements will further elevate the region’s internationally recognised dark sky tourism offering.
This upgrade is timely with a change to their cancellation policy for the Big Sky Stargazing experience. Given the nature of the alpine environment, weather conditions can at times prevent outdoors operations, therefore to ensure clients can still receive a meaningful and memorable astronomy experience during their time in Aoraki they will automatically be provided with a 45-minute indoor planetarium experience within the state-of-the-art facility.
Hooker Valley Track Reopening Confirmed
Department of Conservation (DOC) has confirmed the Hooker Valley Track is expected to reopen by the beginning of August.
The reopening includes the completion of a new 189-metre swing bridge across the Hooker River, allowing The Hermitage to also resume operations of their full-day Hooker Valley guided hikes from 1 September.
Premium vs Premium Plus Rooms
We often get asked about the difference between the hotel’s Premium and Premium Plus room categories.
The main distinction is the room location and elevation within the hotel. Premium Rooms are located on levels 5 to 7 whilst the Premium Plus Rooms are positioned on the highest levels of the property, levels 8 to 10, offering the very best panoramic views of Aoraki / Mount Cook.
Premium Plus Rooms also include additional touches such as bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary bottled water.
