Running for just one month from 15th January to 14th February 2027, ‘Tērā te Auahi – An Interpretation of the Tarawera Eruption’ is returning to the Sir Howard Morrison Centre following overwhelming demand. This powerful contemporary production tells the story of the devastating 1886 Tarawera eruption, through an immersive blend of theatre, live music, movement and kapa haka - bringing one of New Zealand's most significant historical events vividly to life.

Created by Rotorua's acclaimed performing arts collective Te Whare Tapere o Te Arawa, the performance shares the experiences of the people of Te Wairoa and neighbouring villages, exploring themes of loss, resilience and the enduring connection between people and the land. It's an authentic cultural experience that offers travellers a deeper understanding of the history and stories that have shaped the Rotorua region.

Performed Thursday to Sunday evenings in Rotorua's premier performing arts venue, this is an excellent addition to any itinerary, providing travellers with a memorable evening experience after a day of geothermal attractions, Maori culture or adventure activities.
