Zealandia wins Supreme Tourism Award

Congratulations to all our PDNZ suppliers who were recognised and honored at the 2023 award ceremony.

The wildlife sanctuary, led by chief executive Dr Danielle Shanahan, also won the Airbnb Tourism Excellence Award for small to medium businesses at last night’s gala event at Tākina Wellington Convention & Exhibition Centre.

“Zealandia has absolutely transformed what tourism means in Aotearoa New Zealand, and it’s because of some incredible people – volunteers, staff members, trustees,” said Shanahan.

“These are the people who make this place hum, who make Wellington thrive.”

The awards, held by Tourism Industry Aotearoa, saw 13 accolades bestowed, including the Sir Jack Newman Outstanding Industry Leader Award, which was won by former Christchurch Airport chief executive Malcolm Johns.

Christchurch Airport won the KiwiRail Tourism Environment Award, joining other large operators Skyline Queenstown, and GO Rentals in being recognised on the night.

Queenstown operator Altitude Tours won the NZME Visitor Experience Award and the operator’s Heidi Farren picked up the Eudora+ Emerging Tourism Leader Award.

Rotorua’s Tauhara North Tourism – Te Pā Tū also walked away with two gongs: the Toroa ā-uta, Toroa ā-tai Māori Tourism Award and the Westpac Resilience and Innovation Award 2023.

TIA chief executive Rebecca Ingram congratulated everyone who entered, with more than 120 entries for this year’s awards.

“It’s been an honour to hear the stories of these companies and the ways they’ve found, sometimes against tough odds, to thrive and widely contribute to their communities,” Ingram said.

“The values that are shining through a lot of these entries are very affirming, qualities that no doubt win them much support from their host communities and visitors alike.”
