Over the last 12 hours you may have heard news about the weather disruptions affecting the West Coast of the South Island. Due to heavy rain and flooding in some areas, there are a number of road closures and the Waiho bridge near Franz Josef has been washed away by flood waters. Whilst there are currently a number of road closures in the region, these are being monitored by local authorities and they are working hard to reopen them as quickly as possible. We are continuing to monitor the situation and our team are working with any clients in the region at the moment to make alternate arrangements if required.

Roads & services currently impacted:

  • The Waiho Bridge near Franz Josef has been taken out by floodwaters
  • Tranz Alpine Train Journey between Christchurch and Greymouth and vice versa has cancelled its services for Wednesday 27 March 19
  • InterCity Coachlines:  Services between Nelson and Greymouth continue to operate as normal, however services between Greymouth and Franz Josef and Queenstown to Franz Josef in either direction are not operating Wednesday 27 March 19
  • State Highway 6 from Hokitika to Franz Josef remains closed at this time
  • State Highway 73 between Arthur’s Pass to Jacksons is closed due to slip at Candy’s Creek and water over the bridge at Kelly’s Creek
  • State Highway 73 between Otira to Kumara Junction remains closed due to heavy rainfall and surface flooding
  • SH 6 Haast to Makarora remains closed due to slip
  • SH 6 Fox Glacier to Haast remains closed to surface flooding
  • SH 6 Franz Josef to Fox Glacier remains closed at this time

For any clients travelling between Canterbury and the West Coast, there is an alternative route with The Lewis Pass via Reefton and Waipara along State Highway 7 which remains open at this time.

While the team work through these challenges, please be aware there might be some slight delays in turnaround times, however we are doing our very best to ensure this is not the case.

We will continue to keep a close eye on the situation and will update you as more information comes to hand. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
