Following a recent weather event on the West Coast of the South Island, it has unfortunately resulted in the Fox Glacier Valley Access Road to be closed once again. This event has damaged a different portion of the road than previous closures last year and is in the Mills Creek area where there is an active landslip. This landslip has pushed the Fox river against the road and damaged it.  Please refer to the photos where the landslip is clearly evident in a fan shape.

The agencies that are responsible for Fox Glacier Valley Access Road are presently working together gathering information along with further assessment, however as this will take some time it is not clear how long this process will take.

This weather event has result in the closure to one of the Fox Glacier Guiding experiences – Fox Trail Terminal Face Walk, which at this time has been suspended until the 18th April 2019. Fox Glacier Guiding will reassess progress prior to this date and will provide us with an update on the situation accordingly.

Whilst the Terminal Face walk is currently unavailable, there is still a number of other experiences through Fox Glacier Guiding that is available to clients staying in the region and operate as normal. These include:

  • The Flying Fox: Heli Hike
  • The Extreme Fox: All Day Heli Hike Adventure
  • Fox It Up: Heli Ice Climbing
  • Browne Fox: Chancellor Dome Experiences

The Main Road (State Highway 6) in and out of the Fox Glacier township is open and all businesses are operating as normal.

As soon as we receive further updates on this situation we will provide updated news accordingly.
