Along the Edge

Duration: 12 Days

Starts: Perth

Finishes: Perth

(This tour can also be travelled in reverse order)

Experience a land of extreme contrast on this short journey through the south west corner of Australia. Travel through open wheat fields and along the sunburnt highways towards the pristine waters of the southern ocean. Spend time exploring the coastal national parks before venturing deep into the tall timber Karri Forests, home to many of Australia’s iconic wildlife. Indulge in one of Australia’s most famed food & wine regions, the Margaret River, before returning to Perth.

Day 01

Welcome to Perth! Claimed to be the sunniest capital city in Australia with over 3200 hours of sunshine each year. Yes, that’s right, on average 8.8 hours of  sunshine per day!

Today we recommend a visit to Kings Park, one of the biggest city centre park in the world. It’s our top pick and rightly so. It grants epic views of the Swan and Canning rivers with skyscrapers perched on their banks. Astonishingly tall, white-trunked trees line the entrance road to this inspiring patch of green, which has a treetop bridge, bushland trails, manicured gardens and cafés.

If the ocean is calling you Perth is almost unfairly blessed with extraordinary beaches. Transparent blue water with astounding visibility meets white silica sand that seems to stretch on forever.

Day 02
Approximate driving time 4.5 hours, 370 km

Pick up your rental car this morning in the city.

Leaving Perth and travelling south west along the Albany Highway you will soon come across the small town of Williams. A stop at the Williams Woolshed is a great opportunity to learn about the regional industries and try their great coffee.

Continuing south west travel through the seemingly endless wheatbelt country before turning east and passing through the town of Wagin and its proudly standing Giant Ram, a symbol of the region. Continue east and you will pass through Dumbleyoung before arriving at your overnight stay in the heart of the West Australian wheatbelt on a fully operational farm.

Day 03
Approximate driving time 7 hours, 560 km

Leave early and travel north through the town of Kulin and along the quirky Tin Horse Highway. See these impressive and imaginative tin horses created by the local community to reflect their vibrant good humour. Arrive in Hyden late morning; the home of Wave Rock and spend a couple of hours exploring this phenomenal rock formation and surrounding area.

After lunch at Hyden continue to travel south west past the grazing pastures and dried up salt pans of the outback. Pass through the historic settlement of Ravensthorpe where you’ll find untouched bushland, scenic lookouts, historic mining relics and beautiful wildflowers in season. Follow the South Coast Highway
to Esperance.

Day 04

The township of Esperance is an ideal base from which to explore a string of stunning beaches and the natural wonders on the south coast of Western Australia, including Cape Le Grand National Park, Cape Arid National Park, Lake Hillier and the paradise islands of the Recherche Archipelago.

Within Cape Le Grand National Park; one of the most spectacular parks in Australia, the jewel in a string of stunning beaches is Lucky Bay. Here you will find an ocean coloured all imaginable shades of blue, sand so fine it squeaks between your toes and the astonishing sight of kangaroos sunbathing on the beach!

Day 05
Approximate driving time 6 hours, 535 km

Take in island views of the Recherche Archipelago as you head west towards Albany, keeping watch for humpback and southern right whales migrating along the Southern Ocean coastline. Visit the coastal town of Hopetoun and Fitzgerald National Park before passing back through Ravensthorpe and via the Sterling Ranges.

Discover diverse wildflowers, scenic bushwalks, bird life and mountain scenery as you pass over the Stirling Ranges. Between September and November, the wildflowers will be in full bloom. The park is also home to 148 bird species, including parrots and emus, as well as wallabies, kangaroos and other native mammals. It is a short drive further to Albany.

Day 06

Albany is blessed with a rugged coastline which creates a fitting backdrop to a dramatic whaling and convict history. This appealing city marks the spot where the first European settlers set foot in Western Australia, and much of their legacy remains today with colonial buildings standing proudly as museums, galleries and restaurants.

The whaling station museum tells fascinating tales of the town’s whaling industry and the National ANZAC Centre tells the story of Australia’s war history.

Spend time exploring one of the most dramatic coastlines in Western Australia – Torndirrup National Park. From July to October, the tall cliffs make a top whale watching spot when migrating humpback and southern right whales gather to rest and play.

Day 07
Approximate driving time 3.5 hours, 260 km

This morning, follow the scenic southern coastline west to Denmark, where the tall timber forests of the south meet the sea. Here you have the opportunity to learn about one of the world’s oldest living cultures, and more specifically about the Noongar people and Kwoorabup (Denmark), on a guided cultural tour.

Continue following the Scotsdale Scenic Drive through the stunning karri-tree forests that occasionally give way to orchards and farmland. Re-joining the South  Coast highway driving to the Valley of the Giants. These giant red tingle trees grow up to 40m high and the treetop walk offer a bird’s eye view to the surrounding area.

Walpole, Mandalay Beach and Conspicuous Beach offer scenic stops before following the road North West to Pemberton.

Day 08

This morning you will discover the wild side of Australia’s South West diversity on fantastic guided day tour - an exciting, educational and exhilarating journey that allows visitors to the South West access to the inaccessible wilderness of old growth Karri and the Yeagarup Dunes in the D’Entrecasteaux and Warren National Parks.

In the afternoon Beedelup Falls walk trail in Beedelup National Park is a recommended activity. A suspension bridge hangs over the falls, which are in full flow after rain. The Beedelup National Park includes dense karri forest, mixed with jarrah and red gum trees.

Day 09
Approximate driving time 3.5 hours, 235 km

Today’s drive is one of the most scenic you will experience in Australia. The road north from Pemberton takes you through the towns of Manjimup, Bridgetown and Nannup. There will be many opportunities for photo stops throughout the morning and time to absorb the natural beauty of this region. Nannup is a quaint and traditional town and an excellent lunch destination.

The afternoon will see you continue west towards Margaret River. A trip to the Margaret River region promises gourmet food, unspoilt beaches, friendly locals and stunning scenery and of course ideal conditions for grape growing and the production of fine wines.

A recommended side trip on the way is the drive south along the wonderfully scenic Caves Road to Augusta, to see Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and Sugarloaf Rock.

Day 10

This morning you will be picked up from your accommodation and spend a day on a Margaret River Tour, experiencing the regions amazing food, wine and culture. Throughout the day enjoy tastings at Margaret River’s finest cellar doors and other favourite producers, while your guide shows you the best of the region.

Day 11
Approximate driving time 3.5 hours, 255 km

Today you make your way back along the beautiful coastline towards Perth. Busselton is known for its 1.8-kilometre-long jetty and the amazing waterfront precinct which has developed around it. A worthy stop for a bite to eat. A little further north and you will reach Bunbury, home to the wild, yet friendly dolphins that interact with people in Koombana Bay.

Your final destination is Fremantle. Once a separate town, it has long been engulfed by the city of Perth, but plenty of its historical roots remain. Take time to explore with a tour through its prison, a beer at its famous brewery and a photo with a rock ‘n’ roll legend who grew up in its engaging streets.
